Self Hatred Anyone??

Hey All

So something that I have noticed as of recently is a lot of hatred among my fellow gamers/geeks/nerds, now I am not talking about the friendly bad talk in game or the classic "Im gonna to cut you bitch!" or the "Im gonna own you bitch!" Those are all said in good gamer love! :P What I am talking about is the actual hatred among my fellow gamer girls, (and a few gamer guys) And this truly makes me sad! :(

If you follow me on twitter you saw my tweet about a week ago that simply states "Geeks and Gamers need to be proud of who we are! We are already frowned upon enough by "normal" society, we don't need it among ourselves! :D" Though if you ask me I would just simply say what is normal?? Cause to me I am perfectly normal, my obsessive gaming and constant need to own at all video games along with my drive to get all the achievements possible along with my sick need to make sure that everything is perfect :P That is normal to me. Where as to my sister, the massive amounts of make up she owns and changing her clothes four or five times a day and going out to the desert and spending the weekend off roading is completely normal! So the question there is what is really normal?? But I will go into that on a later post! For now we are working on the hatred!
Team Unicorn - named such because you know gamer girls are as elusive as uincorns! - Michele Boyd, Clare Grant, Milynn Sarley and Rileah Vanderbilt; recently released a video entitled "G33k and G4m3r Girls" as a parody of Katy Perry's, California Girls. (Yes I am fully aware of the ComicCon version of this song too done a while before this one, but because this is the well known one, mainly because of the girls themselves we will stick with this one for the blog). I have to say that I personally loved this video, as seen by the fact that I posted it on this very blog with heart felt love over the fact that they did something so amazing. The problem at hand though is the hate that they received from the geek and gamer community!

Now as a girl yes I understand where the hatred is coming from, but as a girl GAMER I don't understand they why of it! Yes these girls are all beautiful and lovely and yes I understand they don't represent our everyday girls, heck I will the first say that yes I know I am not one of the "hot" or "sexy" girls but I am proud of who I am! Both as a girl and as a gamer. Why should we hate on someone because they are beautiful and sexy, and are proud of it themselves?? What because they are this they should hide themselves in a closet and never show it off to the world?? Doesn't that go against everything that we are always saying as a society?? Don't we normally want to put the people that are like this on the pedestal and "worship" them?? Not I personally, I am more interested in what each person stands for and what they are doing with their fame rather then how pretty they are. And each one of these girls has done me very proud. They showed here that girl gamers are not in all reality Unicorns, and a figment of the worlds imagination yet again. So why the hate?? I know that I personally would never be able to do what they did in the video, only because I am not built like them :P but I sure as hell don't hate or fault them for being and doing so!

So explain to me girls (and guys), why are we hating on them for going out there and showing yet again that girls do game?? And not just the sterotypical nerdy girl/guy, you know what I am talking about the ones with the big thick glasses, buck teeth and no fashion sense at all and are still virgins that live in their mothers basement with no social life that is always used to portray us. I for one thank them! Lets show those boys who rule! :P You know I am just kidding guys. I will say this though PLEASE! from one gamer to another stop with the geek on geek hate! Like I said before, we get enough of it from outside the gaming community. Heck most of them consider us to be "sick" and in need of "help" because we are "gamers" O.o Yea I don't get it either but listen to what people are saying and you will see. Apparently we are suppose to "grow-up" and be "normal". We really don't need the self hatred! We have been trying to change this sterotype for years! And here we have girls going out and doing it, and all you can do is hate on them! How hypocritical is that?? If you are really not happy with how they do it then stop bitching and do something yourselves, show that they are not the majority!
Yes I am a girl! Yes I am a gamer! Yes I am cute! Yes I have a fashion sense! Yes I function in real life(well for the most part)! Yes I can quote Starwars! Yes I own 20 sided dice! Yes I pwn at video games! Yes I play Modern Warfare2! Yes I play World of Warcraft, and not just a raider but a RAID LEADER! Yes I h ave collectibles! Yes I own comics! Yes I love Star Trek! Yes I wear make up! Yes I play sports! Yes I have a family! Yes I have a steady job! Yes I wear glasses! Yes I love mudding! Yes I social life! Yes I date! Yes I have a family(including two sisters who pull me out when I get to into a game :P)!

No I don't care what you think of me. You either like me or you don't and that is completely up to you and you alone. :D Now if you will excuse me I am going back to MW2 I got a N00Bs to take out!! :P

Hmmm.....

Hey all!

Alright, so I just watched Abby Heppe's review on Metroid: Other M. I have to say first of all that I am not in full agreement with her on how horrid the game was. Yes there was a few things that I would have to agree with, they did sexitize her a little bit in this game. I just don't think it was as bad as they make it out to be in her review. And yes the mechanics need a lot of work, they didn't flow as nicely as they should have with the Wii Remote. They gave her a feminine side, is that so horrible?? Why can't she be a strong woman, and still be a woman. That's what she is after all. I am a gamer yes, but I pride myself on being a girl. That includes make up and everything else that makes me a girl. I do agree that she shouldn't have been so subservient to Adam, but you also have to remember she does follow him out of respect and love. And because he is her commander, anyone in the military will tell you that you HAVE to follow orders, you may not like the orders but you have to follow them. She is still the strong woman she was I mean come on the guys she teams up with are getting in trouble and who saves their asses?? Samus! And lastly, what is the problem with her voice being girly?? I am 23 years old, I still sound like a little girl most the time. When I answer the phone half the time people will actually ask me, "Is your mommy home?" -_- And having heard her voice myself, I have to say that she doesn't sound all that much like a little girl. I honestly think that I sound more like a little girl then her. Some girls just have voice like that, is it so wrong?? I should hope not. :P

I am not saying that Abby is wrong in her views on the contrary I agree with her right to be offended. I just don't see how it is so horrible for Samus to come a little more into her feminine side. I know that even we girl gamers like to get dressed up and feel pretty every now and then.

Edit: (7 Sept 2010) I was watching G4 today and saw the trailer for Metorid: Other M again, and it just reinforced what I am trying to say here. Samus' past is what makes her, her. It is not something she can run from. It is something that she has to embrace.

"My past is not a memory, its a force at my back. It pushes and steers. I may not always like where it leads me but like any story the past needs resolution."

Call of Duty: Black Ops! Mulitplayer!

Hey All!

Alright, so something that you might not know about me is that one of my favorite game series of all time is Call of Duty. And with Call of Duty: Black Ops just around the corner I am so freaking stoked! I am constantly reading up on all the stuff that is to come in this new installment in the series and finding myself more and more excited they have yet to disappoint! Well reading through a few things tonight, I found out a little bit more about the Multiplayer mode, a combat training mode for those who have never played multiplayer before, and even more exciting a currency to be introduced to the game!

First a quick look at the combat training apparently you will get to choose this option to try and get a little practice in on playing in the live mulitplayer mode. The idea came from a dummy the team created named Larry who stood in the field and reported back damaged received to the programmers, soon everyone even the Devs wanted Larry to be a little more and he was developed into a full package thus bring AI opponents into the game. In this mode you will get to choose to play alone or with friends. There is not much information out on this right now but as soon as I come across more I will be posting on it for now lets just leave it at this.

Next CURRENCY! So if you have ever played a Call of Duty game you know that a huge part of the fun is trying to unlock the different items, and Kill streaks. With the introduction of CP or "CoD Points" we see a whole new idea to getting the stuffs you want. Instead of waiting for it to unlock now you can save up the amount of CP it takes and use that to open it up instead. It also seems that our perks will be changed around a little bit, something like choosing Ghost will put you in guilly suit where as scavenger will give you lots of pouches on your armor. This will also be seen by other players so that they will know at a glance what perks you have equipped.

Alright so what is cash in hand without a bit of gambling?! Well the creators of Black Ops fully agree! They have created a series of four multiplayer games called "Wage Matches" which allow people to ante up and compete against each other for the combined CP, the top three players of each match walk away with it split between them. The rest, well lets just say better luck next time!

The four wage matches are actually pretty awesome in their own rights! "One in the Chamber" is a battle of the pistol! Everyone gets one pistol and one bullet, killing an opponent gives you another bullet well missing means you are left with just your knife, now don't worry to much! If you manage to kill someone with your knife then you will be granted another bullet to go about trying to kill people! "Sticks and Stones" arms each player with a tomahawk and a crossbow! Yes folks you heard me right a freaking crossbow! If you manage to kill an opponent with a tomahawk it automatically puts them at bankrupt in the match thus making them have to work to get all their CP back and to try and win the match :P This is probably going to be one of my favorites! "Gun Game" is a battle royal! Players will progress through different tiers of guns where killing a player will get you the next level of gun but die and you are dropped back down! Last but not least we have "Sharp Shooter" this match is designed to be a weapons knowledge game. Every player will have the same weapon at a time but the weapons are randomly generated and at the end of a set period of time the weapon will change to a different one. I must say I am fully excited for all four of these matches and can't wait to start betting my CoD Points away! :P

Another way to make money goes to the always loved version where you are a "hitman"! Alright, alright not so much but you do get to have the fun of "buying" a "contract" with your CP. You then have to complete said contract in the amount of time allotted. For example, you buy a contract that says you are going to kill 50 players in four matches, if you complete this you will be payed back in more CP then you paid for the contract thus turning a profit. If you are epic fail and somehow do not complete this contract you loose your monies all together and are left broke and on the streets left to beg for CP!

Something I always look forward to is customization! In Black Ops you will be able to customize your weapons even further! And even be able to create emblems and place them on your guns! It seems that new gear has been added to our beloved care packages as well! There is a Gatling gun, an off site mortar team, a remotely controlled bomb, a movable SAM turret that targets any aircraft in the Area, a special RPG and my personal favorite a napalm strike! Who doesn't just love to sit back and watch things burn in sticky goo??

And lastly something all of us epic players look forward to, the ability to not only brag about our achievements in game but to also be able to SHOW them off! Black Ops will allow the player to record their matches! You will then be able to save, store, share and browse! Show off how good you are, and see how epic fail everyone else is! :P

Just in case you all were wondering yes Zephy plays live mode she is addicted to killing peoples and reviles in the opportunity to do so in MW2! My beloved Callsign and Emblem:

Most Influential Game of All Time!

This semester at school I am taking a class dedicated entirely to the element of gaming! I am in love with this class! First let me give a shout out to my class who is reading this, and a big thank you for voting my poster in 1st place, along with a congratz to my two fellow placers! And to my Professor Tracy, for creating the class! For our first assignment of the class we had to choose and write a paper on what we believed to be the most influential game of all time and why. I present to you, Zephy's choice for most influential game of all time!

Most Influential Game of All Time

Let me first start off by saying that this is one of the hardest assignments that I have ever had to do, and it has excited me more then any in a long time. I sat down for hours thinking over the answer to the one question asked “What do you believe is the most influential game of all time?” I went through hundreds of games in my head and the reasons that they could be consider influential, in reality how influential they were or are, and in the end it came down to two. Either Doom, the game that completely changed the face of First-Person Shooters which are my favorite, or Metroid, the first game to have a female Protagonists. After much thought I figured it would be best to go with something that I stand for in my blog (http://girlsdontgame-headshot.blogspot.com) and choose the game that brings women to the fore-front of gaming: Metroid.

Now I know that Metroid is in reality not the first game to star a female character, that would be Ms. Pac Man but it is noted for having the first female protagonist in a video game. Protagonist for the Greek protagonistes meaning “one who plays the first part, chief actor, the leading character, hero or heroine of a drama or other literary work.” This is the person in the story, or in this case the video game plot line, whom the events of said plot line revolve around and with whom the audience is intended to share the most empathy; (Empathy - The capacity to, through imagination rather than literally, share the sadness or happiness of another sentient being.) And well we don’t know that Samus Aran is female at the start we learn in a surprising twist that the character we have come to love and relate to is in fact a girl who is a femme de force; a girl that can and will save herself, and kick your butt in the process.

From the beginning of history we have seen the story over and over again. Princess/damsel is captured by the evil/misunderstood villain; hero comes along and saves her/kills or entraps the evil and is rewarded with either a kiss from or the princess herself. The thing we rarely see is that girl saving herself. Metroid showed us that that is possible, and in doing so brought a new and revolutionary idea to the video game industry. Girl’s can game too, and they don’t have to be a sex object well doing so. The moment at the end of Metroid when Samus is relieved to be a girl is considered one of the greatest twists in a video game, and the greatest moment in Nintendo history.

The game play in itself is revolutionary, combining the platforming of Super Mario Bros and the exploration of the world as in The Legend of Zelda and containing elements of shooters, makes for the great nonlinear gameplay that we find in Metroid with a much darker atmosphere. The Metroid series will consists of eleven games as of the 31st of August 2010, and is one of Nintendo’s most successful franchises with over 16 million games sold.

That right there proves that Activision is wrong in its latest statements, recently brought to light, where they claimed “they don’t do female characters because they don’t sell.” The Metroid series has been and is still running strong since its first release in 1986, with the latest and much anticipated installment Metroid: Other M being released later this month (31 August 2010). Thus proving that statement wrong and that a female character, can, will and do sell; provided that the character is more then just a sex object.

So after much internal debate, and hours of research; I truly believe Metroid to be the most influential game of all time. Not only being an evolution in gaming, but for showing the world that women can be the lead in a video game too, and you’ll still love her. It makes me proud to be a strong women and true girl gamer.
